Disgaea Mayhem Battle Buddy Tier List

Battle Buddies are defeated demon enemies recruited to fight alongside N.A. in Disgaea Mayhem. Only one Buddy is active at a time, but through Magichange you can transform that companion into your equipped weapon — gaining stat bonuses and unlocking weapon-specific skill chains tied to the Buddy’s demon type.

This tier list ranks recruitable demons and Magichange utility based on community feedback from story chapters, Item World grinding, and ease of recruitment.

How Battle Buddies Work

Recruitment is not guaranteed. After defeating certain demon enemy types, there is a random chance the defeated foe voluntarily joins your roster. You can maintain a collection of recruited Buddies but equip only one at a time.

During combat, activating Magichange merges your Buddy into your current weapon. The resulting form inherits:

  • Base stat bonuses from the Buddy’s level and rarity
  • Unique skill chains unavailable with standard weapons alone
  • Temporary transformation duration before the Buddy reverts

Understanding which Buddies synergise with your weapon build is a meaningful optimisation layer beyond raw weapon tier rankings.

Tier Rankings

S Tier — High Impact

Fast Ranged Demons (Generic Ranged Archetype)

Demons with ranged attack patterns draw enemy aggro while N.A. deals damage from a safer position. In Item World wave sequences where positioning determines survival, a ranged Buddy that distracts enemies creates openings for Gun and Bow users especially.

Community consensus: Ranged Buddies provide the highest tactical value in high-difficulty Item World content because they extend the effective safety window for backline weapon builds.

A Tier — Strong All-Rounders

High-Stat Legendary Demons

Legendary-tier demons recruited in mid-to-late game offer the highest raw stat contribution during Magichange. Their stat bonuses scale with level and Reincarnation rank, making them preferable once you have the infrastructure to level them alongside N.A.

The trade-off is recruitment rarity — Legendary demons appear less frequently and require more defeats before joining.

Prinnies

The franchise mascot remains a fan favourite for good reason. Prinnies do not offer the highest raw Magichange stats, but their explosive suicide attacks provide excellent crowd control — clearing entire enemy clusters at the cost of the Buddy sacrificing itself for one attack.

Prinnies are among the earliest recruitable demons and remain useful throughout the campaign. See the Prinnies character guide for franchise context.

B Tier — Situational Value

Melee Bruiser Demons

Heavy melee Buddies contribute strong close-range stat boosts during Magichange but overlap with N.A.’s natural role when using Fist or Sword builds. They shine when paired with ranged weapons (Gun, Bow, Staff) where N.A. stays at distance while the Buddy’s melee stats augment projectile damage.

Support-Oriented Demons

Some demons provide buffs or healing-adjacent effects rather than direct damage amplification. These are valuable in extended Item World runs where sustain matters more than burst damage, but less impactful in fast story chapter clears.

C Tier — Niche Picks

Slow Heavy Demons

Demons with slow attack patterns and low mobility struggle to contribute during fast-paced real-time combat. Their Magichange stat bonuses may be respectable on paper, but the action RPG format punishes sluggish companions more severely than turn-based Disgaea titles.

Magichange Synergy by Weapon

WeaponBest Buddy TypeReason
GunMelee BruiserBuddy draws aggro; Gun clears from range
FistsRangedBuddy distracts while Fists combo at close range
StaffRangedStaff needs charge time; Buddy buys space
SwordBalanced All-RounderSword handles most situations solo
SpearMelee BruiserShared frontline pressure
BowMelee BruiserSame aggro-draw logic as Gun
AxeRangedAxe is slow; Buddy must pull enemies away

Recruitment Tips

  • Defeat the same demon type repeatedly to increase recruitment probability
  • Not every enemy type is recruitable — boss enemies and story-specific foes typically are not
  • Buddy level growth follows N.A.’s general progression; Reincarnation affects long-term Buddy stat scaling
  • Experiment with Magichange timing — activating mid-combo versus at wave start produces different tactical outcomes

Subjectivity Warning

Battle Buddy rankings depend heavily on your weapon choice and play style. A demon ranked B tier for Gun users may be A tier for Axe players who desperately need aggro relief. Use this list as a starting point, not a mandate.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions from Disgaea Mayhem players.

Can I recruit multiple Prinnies?

You can recruit multiple Prinnies into your roster over time, but only one Battle Buddy is active per mission. Prinny suicide attacks consume the active Buddy for that attack regardless of how many you have stored.

Do Battle Buddies persist through Reincarnation?

Recruited Buddies remain in your roster after N.A. Reincarnates. Buddy levels reset according to Reincarnation rules alongside N.A.'s progression systems.

Which demon is easiest to recruit early game?

Prinnies and common low-tier demons appear frequently in early chapters and have relatively high recruitment rates compared to Legendary types.

Does Magichange replace my weapon permanently?

No. Magichange is a temporary combat transformation. Your equipped weapon returns to normal after the Magichange duration ends or the Buddy is dismissed.
