Getting Started in Disgaea Mayhem

Disgaea Mayhem opens with a brief animated sequence establishing the game’s premise: the mercenary N.A. is summoned to the Super Duper Netherworld by Overlord Tichelle, who needs his help recovering a stolen dessert of immense sentimental value. Within minutes, you are in control of N.A. in a combat arena, learning the fundamental inputs that will govern every fight for the rest of the game.

This guide covers the basics thoroughly. Read it before starting if you are new to the franchise, or skip to the relevant section if you are a returning fan who mainly needs to understand what has changed.

Controls Overview

Disgaea Mayhem uses a standard dual-analogue control scheme. On PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, this means:

  • Left stick — Move N.A. in any direction. Unlike the grid-based games, movement is continuous and real-time.
  • Right stick — Adjust camera angle (where supported).
  • X / A button (light attack) — The fastest basic attack. Chain light attacks into combos by pressing rhythmically.
  • Y / Triangle button (heavy attack) — Slower but higher damage. Heavy attacks interrupt enemy actions and are better for groups. Pressing heavy attack at different points in your combo string produces different follow-up attacks.
  • B / Circle button (guard) — Raise your weapon to block incoming attacks. Guarding reduces damage significantly and can interrupt certain enemy charge attacks.
  • A / X button (while moving, dash) — Press A/X while moving to dash in any direction. Dashing is your primary defensive tool and is essential for evading large enemy groups and boss charge attacks.
  • RB / R1 + face buttons (skill activation) — Hold RB/R1 and press a face button to activate one of your equipped special skills. Each weapon supports up to four skills, which become available as you acquire higher-tier weapons. Skills have individual cooldowns — you cannot spam them.
  • Y / Triangle (jump) — Some combos and arena layouts benefit from jumping. Off-ground attacks have different properties than grounded ones.

Combat Philosophy: Mobility First

The most important thing to internalise early is that Disgaea Mayhem rewards aggressive mobility. Unlike the turn-based Disgaea games where you commit to a position and execute a plan, here you must always be moving. Standing still in a crowd of enemies is the fastest way to die.

Your dash has a very short cooldown — use it freely. The instinct to button-mash will not be punished severely, but it will leave you vulnerable against bosses who have attack patterns that require timed dodges rather than sustained offence. The game is described by reviewers as “approachable first, deep second” — easy to pick up but with enough mechanical depth to reward mastery.

Weapon Classes

The game presents you with the sword as your starting weapon. After completing the first chapter, you gain access to all seven weapon types from any loadout screen. Each weapon class has a dramatically different feel:

  • Sword — Balanced, reliable, the easiest to pick up.
  • Spear — Reach advantage; good for controlling distance.
  • Axe — High damage, slow, poor crowd control.
  • Fist — Extremely fast, satisfying, excellent for close-range combos.
  • Bow — Ranged with a narrow arc; useful for picking off isolated enemies.
  • Gun — Overpowered ranged option; community consensus holds that it is significantly easier to use than any melee weapon.
  • Staff — Passive charging of magic orbs before launching; powerful in high-difficulty situations, awkward in fast-paced chapters.

Experiment freely — you can swap weapons at any loadout screen without losing progress.

The First Three Chapters

The opening chapters of Disgaea Mayhem are designed as an extended tutorial. You will be introduced to:

  1. Basic movement and combat
  2. Weapon switching
  3. Special skills and their cooldowns
  4. The Dark Chocolate Assembly (hub world)
  5. The Item World (after Chapter 2 or 3)

Do not feel pressured to optimise your build during these chapters. The game is intentionally easy during the story mode, and the real depth begins when you start engaging with the Item World and the Reincarnation system.

What to Do First

After completing the tutorial chapter:

  1. Explore the hub world and talk to Tichelle to understand the narrative structure.
  2. Visit the Dark Chocolate Assembly and pass your first bills (this unlocks new facilities including the Item World entrance).
  3. Enter the Item World using your best piece of equipment and run 2-3 floors. This will give you a feel for the wave-based survival loop.
  4. Begin thinking about which weapon type feels most comfortable — this will inform your build priorities.

Reincarnation: Do Not Rush It

One piece of advice that many beginners miss: do not Reincarnate your character until you understand the stat growth implications. Reincarnation resets your level to 1 and permanently changes how your base stats grow on future level-ups. It is a long-term optimisation tool, not an early-game shortcut. The Reincarnation guide explains the full mechanics.

Similarly, the Item World guide provides a complete explanation of how Enhancement Points work and how to allocate them efficiently.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions from Disgaea Mayhem players.

Can I play with a controller that is not the default layout?

Yes. All platforms support custom button remapping through the system settings. Disgaea Mayhem also offers in-game control customization for sensitivity and invert options.

Should I focus on one weapon or switch between all seven?

Early in the game, focus on mastering one weapon type that feels comfortable. As you progress and unlock the Item World, you will naturally collect weapons of all types. The game is designed so that any weapon is viable, so personal preference matters more than optimisation at this stage.

What is the difference between the tutorial and the main game?

The tutorial is essentially the first chapter of the story. It introduces all the core mechanics at a reduced difficulty. After the tutorial, the game gradually increases challenge until you unlock the Item World and Dark Chocolate Assembly systems, at which point the primary progression loop shifts from story completion to system optimisation.

How do I recruit a Battle Buddy?

Battle Buddies are recruited by defeating demon enemies in combat. Not every enemy can be recruited — it depends on the enemy type and a random chance. As you defeat more enemies, certain demons will voluntarily join you after being defeated. You can have only one active Battle Buddy at a time.
